Laurelia novae-zelandiae (also called Pukatea) is a large evergreen tree, endemic to the forests of New Zealand Pukatea grows throughout the North Island of New Zealand, and the northern third of the South Island. It often grows in damp low-land forests, especially gullies.

Pukateine is an alkaloid found in the bark of the New Zealand tree Laurelia novae-zelandiae ("Pukatea"). An extract from pukatea is used in traditional Māori herbal medicine as an analgesic, and it is thought pukateine is the active component.
