 Kawakawa

Kawakawa is a traditional medicinal plant of the Maori. An infusion is made from the leaves or roots, and used for bladder problems, boils, bruises, to relieve pain or toothache, or as a general tonic. The sweet edible yellow berries (most often found in summer on female trees) of the plant were eaten as a diuretic.

The kawakawa leaves and terminal branchlets contain about 0.1% essential oil by steam distillation, composed of up to 41.3% myristicin, about 3.1% elemicin as well as minor amounts of pinene, phellandrene, aromadendrene, cadinene and other unidentified compounds.

The flavour profiles of kawakawa are similar to nutmeg, pepper with a very slight hint of mint. Kawakawa can be combined in meat rubs, with salt as a seasoned salt or can be used as a herb in cooking. In leaf form, it also makes a great herbal tea that is said to be very detoxing. Many international chefs are discovering this product and it can be seen on menus in Europe, Asia and New Zealand.
